The way Java applets get embedded into web pages has evolved over the years. More and more web pages are being written using XHTML and the way objects need to be embedded in XHTML pages has changed too. If you use Ansir's XHTML JSP Object Tag Library, then JSP content developers will not need to worry about the details. In the future and if standards change then don't update hundreds of web pages, instead update only the tag library. Better yet, this project has been open sourced.
When we first started working on this tag library we were only going to implement a tag library for applets. Embedding an applet is not that much different from embedding a Flash or QuickTime movie. We realized that a more general object tag library would benifit more that just Java folks. We made the desision to open the XHTML JSP Object Tag Library, so anyone that wants it can have it for free.
